Here's how you can become a community climate ambassador from Austin EcoNetworkThe Office of Sustainability has launched the Community Climate Ambassadors program, a new initiative designed to help the city better understand what issues the community is facing, identify shared goals, and consider what approaches to take in order to achieve a sustainable future. In particular, this program is focused on applying an equity lens to climate work, as well as understanding the experiences of historically underrepresented groups in Austin.   Ambassadors will be paid for their time. Save Our Springs Alliance has influenced two major improvements to CodeNEXT: All proposed amendments to the Save Our Springs Initiative Ordinance, which protects water quality in the Barton Springs Zone, have been officially removed from the draft. And a major error to the Barton Springs Zone Overlay was identified and the City has committed to correcting it.  This error would have allowed large-scale car dealerships and big box stores to develop over the Barton Springs segment of the Edwards Aquifer. Regional transportation planners recently considered and rejected the CAMPO (Capital Area Metropolitan Planning Organization) "Regional Arterial Study," a document proposing several new roads through environmentally sensitive areas. Stay engaged! There are ongoing public comment opportunities: CAMPO is taking public comment on its 2045 Regional Transportation Plan until Nov 30 and CAMPO is developing a Regional Transit Study focusing on long-term transit connections for rural and suburban areas outside of Capital Metro's Service Area; comments are accepted until Nov 22. Save Our Springs Alliance and Austin Independent Business Alliance have endorsed the Unconventional Austin petition, which would require Austin voter approval for the proposed $1.2 billion convention center expansion and redirect hotel tourism dollars towards cultural, heritage and environmental projects.  If the city clerk certifies that at least 20,000 signatures are valid, the petitioned ordinance will likely appear on this November's ballot. So far this year, 35 members, including Shubhra who earned her very first paycheck, have gained new employment through the Transitional Employment Program. St. David’s Foundation generously awarded Austin Clubhouse two grants for a total of $189,600!

The official 2018 Texas Book Festival Weekend schedule is out and BookPeople couldn't be more excited. With two days packed full of more than 300 authors in 250+ events, including book talks and signings, live entertainment, activities and storytimes for kids, cooking demonstrations and more, there is truly something for every reader at the 2018 Texas Book Festival. Some of the favorite authors to add to your list are Jacqueline Woodson, Tommy Orange, Jose Antonio Vargas, Jamel Brinkley, & Yuyi Morales.
